I've come to understand that Flare Guns were used to signal the approach of hostile aircraft and that flight leaders would shoot them off to alert their own pilots.
I haven't found any more details than that. *What types of flare guns are these? *Where were they kept so as not to fly around the cockpit. *Wouldn't it be a hazard if it went off too close to the benzine?
What color were said flares? *Did the flight leader have more flares to re-load the gun with after their fight in case they got into another scrap? *were they specific to the Central Powers? *The Allies? *Both?
Any help/insight would be great.
