Helmet ear flaps

YHS recently in Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum, and jolly good it is too.

In Great War section was a flying helmet with those cylindrical flaps vertical over the ears. Seem to remember asking about them in this forum x years ago without a satisfactory explanation of their purpose.

Finally seeing the real item, not just a photo, noticed they are forward of where the ears would be and there is a hole directly over the ear opening. My assumption would be that the cylinder breaks up the airflow making hearing better.

Does anyone know otherwise?

cheers, Boom
