Question US Pilot's Pistol?

Somebody posted this on Reddit earlier today: https://imgur.com/a/l2ow4

Anybody ever heard of a T.A. Evans with the U.S. Army Air Service?

Here's the Reddit thread:

I am not convinced. The U.S. Army Air Service was not created until May 24, 1918 so having it engraved on a French 1915 pistol and touting that it is from 1917 to 1918 seems incongruous. Also the engravings appear to be relatively recently done, especially the style of the ones on the end of the barrel. And, if the guy was a pilot, the Air Service collar disks make no sense since those are the ones that would have been worn by an enlisted man, not an officer. My guess is that this is a "commemorative" item created from some old pieces and put together relatively recently.
