I am looking for plans/drawings/ images/links, interior as well as exterior, of German and British wood hangers of the “permanent structure” type. The purpose of this search is to enable me to build patterns of hangers in both 1/72 and 1/48th. Scale for casting in resin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom,

if you try a search on "Hangar" at the Public Records Office Catalogue here:

PRO Catalogue search

there are are number of documents relating to hangers of various types, though mostly the portable type, i.e. Bessoneau. I note there is one file of photographs of both Allied and German hangers.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to respond to me enquiry. I have tried the link but it takes forever to download and at times it hangs, the server would seem to be unable to handle the traffic volume. As this is a source that I hadn’t tried I’ll plug away and see what I can get.

I want to build a small diorama with a hanger in 1/72nd. Scale as well as one in 1/48th, I’ll probably just do hanger frontage for that one. Tonight I completed work on a master pattern to convert the RPM model T Ford into a pickup truck, with a fully encased wooden cab and a drop-leaf tailgate. I’ll cast up a couple of these in resin for the diorama and a few extra for future projects that I have in mind. As this was so much fun I’d like to additional Model “T” variants for airfields as I’m sure there must have been any number of air force specific variants that I could do.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Tom

I have built 2, plus another now underway. The first was a hangar of german design that looks somewhat like a temporary shed that was designed to be moved as the front moved. The second is more like a barn type structure also of the temporary variety.I am now buuilding a more permanent structure based upon a painting of the Toronto Flying Club hanger of the 30s.The best representation of WW1 era hangars here in Canada is to be found at Camp Borden Ontario. There are even pictures available of them under construction. My hangars are 1/16th but I dont see any problems in building in the smaller scales. My model T truck was an automobile conversion mostly out of my imagination as I understand that in field service they varied a lot. I saw some nice pics recently on the www.wwi-models.org site of a WW1 truck.Hope this helps.Cheers! John.
