Hello

This man was the first commander of FFA 36 in August 1914...
I wonder if anyone has information how long he stayed in command, his first name and if he was related to the later famous Ace Georg von Hantelmann...

For any hints, thanks in advance

Gunnar

Gunnar, are you sure about the unit. I have a Ritt. von Hantelmann as C.O. of Festung Fl.Abt. 4 from 1Aug14?? Did Fest FA 4 become FFA 36?? No first name, and can't answer your question re. Georg vH. Confused in CA. R.

Hi Rick and Gunnar,

never found this guy in any official or unofficial pre- or after-war listings of German air men.
Was he really a "von" ?

Hi,

the Ferko Collection includes the following entry:

>>8 Correspondence from Johann, Adolf, Ulrich von Hantelmann and his photograph<<

I assume the man´s name is Johann Adolf Ulrich von Hantelmann and the comma between the names an American add-on. As well I have two Sonderbände stating that Rittmeister von Hantelmann was leading Fest FA 4 - and these sources are in general trustworthy.

We need somebody in Dallas to visit the collection and see how vH signed his name!! The comma's could also mean his name is Ulrich Adolf Johann, although that would be a 'strange' way to write it. Guunar - thanks for the update regarding Fest FA 4. R.

Hi,
Don't know if this is your man...but there has been a Johann A d o l f Ulrich von Hantelmann. He was born in Braunschweig 18 Dec 1875 and he was KIA 9 Oct 1916 at Bovent near Péronne during the Somme-battle as a Batallionskommandeur of Kgl.Preuss. Füsilier-Regiment Generalfeldmarschall Graf Moltke (Schlesisches) Nr.38

No hint if there was any connection to the Fliegertruppe *:-/

If this is the right man, then there was no close relationship to Jasta-Pilot Georg von Hantelmann...

Immo

P.S. Hm, I wonder if Ferko had some supernatural abilities to talk to dead persons... Errr...I keep searching for another Johann Adolf Ulrich...

Georg von Hantelmann served in the Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 17. The Ehrenrangliste shows a Ltn. Hantelmann as Ltn. aD (ausser Dienst=retired), and deceased 7.9.24. The same list, for the same unit, shows a Rtm. v. Hantelmann as Major aD, and I would have to guess that they are related. The Major aD indicates that he survived the war, and retired afterwards.
From the pamphlet "Georg von Hantelmann: Erinnerungen aus dem Leben meines Bruders", by Anna-Luise Bardt, it is known the GvH's father served in Russia in 1914, and in 1918 was in France, at Lassigny, 20 km from where GvH was stationed. Unfortunately I do not have the first 16 pages of this pamphlet; only pages 17-50 are in the Ferko collection. I suspect these missing pages cover his early family life, before transferring to aviation. Does anyone have these pages, or know where a complete copy of the pamphlet can be found?

Frank.

Hi,

I cross-checked my sources. There was only one "Johann Adolf Ulrich" in the whole von Hantelmann family. For a short time he was with the 6. Husarenregiment...

To the family:
Georg von Hantelmann belonged to the 1.Line of the family, Johan Adolf Ulrich von Hantelmann to the 2.Line. The Lines splitted at the end of the 18.century, when I remember right in the year 1798...

Georgs father hold the rank of Rittmeister der Landwehr a.D.
