The new tech

This is a scene the new Russian picture Devyatayev, marketed abroad as V2 Escape From Hell. It's about Mikhail Devyatayev, whom some of you may remember from the Guinness Book. The footage appears to have been created using the War Thunder engine as a basis for the CGI.

No doubt there are some errors or exaggerations, but I think it demonstrates what can be done now with the modern technology. It may enable more aviation pictures, from our own area of interest.

I always thought that the best way to film WWI air combat scenes would be:

- Use a realistic game engine as an input to extract motion data for the airplanes. Something like Rise Of Flight, or Flying Circus.

- Recruit a bunch of good sim pilots and let them rehearse some "choreographed" scenes while letting them improvise as in real combat.

- MODEL A "CAMERA PLANE"! - Please, no more CGI shots with the camera following a bullet or static in mid-air!

- Substituye the low-res game planes and environment for hi-res versions of the same. Render and... voila!

I'm sure that it would be doable with the current technology. The main objetive is NOT letting the CGI nerds decide about the performance and maneuverability of airplanes they have only seen in photographs.

The flight controls (ailerons and elevator) seemed to mimic the direction and movement of the plane for once! That was certainly a better level of CGI. The bridge stuff was hollywood but much of it looked more realistic than the norm for CGI. Thanks for sharing. Steve

Fascinating, even with a machine translation. It certainly gives the actors more cues than a green screen and "Look up!" directions. The finished film gives a good impression of a real man in a real plane, in combat.
