B 5047 would be a RE8, which it looks like.

It looks like an R.E. 8 to me, Sir. B6047 would be a Sopwith Pup, which this certainly is not.

Re8 confirmed

Hello ...Yes this is definately an RE8 machine .....Just visible is the small under fin and tail skid , which , amongst many other things , confirms this .

Hi,

This is actually RE8 B5047 of 4 Sqn which set out on a bombing operation at 5-45am on 10th April 1918, on the XV Corps Front. They were hit by ground machine-gun fire, became lost and were forced to land at La Gorgue. The crew of 2Lt CA Mason and Lt CR Pilcher-Hemingway were both wounded, and were taken to hospital, but the aircraft was unsalvable.

One can interpret from the photograph - namely it's a German photo and the presence of German personnel - that they came down rather close to the battle face...

It's a very interesting photo. Thanks for posting it, and I hope the above helps.

Regards,
Trevor
