US Aviation POWs Photo ID help
Gents -
The attached is a photo of New Jersey native Van Winkle TODD, 103rd Aero Squadron, POW'd 11 August 1918. Possibly downed by Sgt. Beschow of Jasta 64w who claimed a SPAD that morning. Todd was later sent to Villingen where this snap was taken.
Todd is the man in the middle without the hat, but the other four men are not identified. One is clearly a USAS pilot, one a US Naval pilot and a third presumably a US volunteer with the RAF. I suspect the fellow in the great coat is also a pilot.
Does anyone recognize the other pilots ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Very interesting picture! Especially because of the word Kinematograph (cinematograph) on the hut. I have never seen this on a picture before.
Thanks a lot for this, Mike!
Regards
Rainer

Villingen
Tom -
Pretty sure this was shot at Villingen.
Let me know if any of the other three look familiar....

Mike-
The pilot standing far right [I]might[I] be 2nd Lt. Henry Joseph Leavitt, R.A.F., B.E.F., Sixty-Fifth Squadron, Twenty-Second Wing who was forced down over Germany territory on May 17,1918 due to problems with his machine. He was finally released from prison on December 13, 1918. Leavitt spent time at Karlsruhe, Rastadt, & Stralsund-the last being his final destination as a POW.
I found his bio & photo on pg. 116 of New England Aviators, Vol II. Let me know your impressions on a possible match.

Unpacking
Chcuk -
I'll check that out when I start unpacking books this weekend. I'll check NEA and I think I have the POW reports as well which might give m a clue. Without having it in front of me, does it say if and where Leavitt attended school ? I have a few of the University "War Record" compilations which usually have a decent bio.
Thanks for the assist - One down (maybe), two to go....

Mike-
He was born in Sanford, Maine on October 4, 1892 to a Henry & Cora Leavitt of Auburn, Maine. Leavitt attended Sanford High School, Tennessee Military Institute & North Eastern College of Boston (class of '15). He enlisted in the RFC in July of 1917.
We got his DOB but I'm curious as to his other vital stats. The person in your image is not what I'd call the tallest aviator in this group shot. If we can somehow find his height measurement, that may be another clue we can use.

Attestation
If he enlisted in Canada, we might be able to get that from his Attestation Papers.
Wonder if North Eastern College of Boston is still in business....Guess I can look.
