Aircraft was a Siemens-Schuckert D.I, unit was Jasta 5. He was performing a test flight in the aircraft and he lost control and crashed. Some reports say the aircraft burst into flames before it crashed. The location was Boistraincourt, the Jasta 5 airfield. The burned remains of the SSW D.I are seen in two known photos. See Neal O'Connor's Vol. 5 for more info and photos of Hans von Hauptmann Hans von Hühnerbein. He was the commander of Jasta 5 at the time of his death.

Mates,
Thanks for the info - I was interested in the aspects of his demise, as there is virtually nill on it that I have been able to find.

Is there a book title in Neal O'Connor's Vol 5 that I might reference in my search for the book????

thanks again mates, and a Merry X-Mas and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
