Budapest and Vienna

Brandenburg BI.jpg

I visited the aircraft museum in Budapest (Varosliget Park, near Heroes' Sq. --note: this is a separate facility from the Transport Museum, but close by).

The photo (above) shows a Brandenburg B-I. The hall is unfortunately not purpose-built and therefore the plane is a bit unhappily parked between two poles, so a "clean" photo is not possible. Someone gave me a translation of the info display: "2-seat trainer from WWI; numerous examples of the model produced in Hungary with this one from 1926..."

(Just in case the translation is misleading or incomplete, I repeat it in original:
"Ketuleses iskdarepulogep az elso vilaghaboru alatt hazankban nagy sorozatban gyartott repologeptipus egy kesoi peldanya 1926-bol.
Motor: Mercedes, 6 hengeres, 74 kW-os
Manufacturer: Repulogepavito Uzem, Szekesfehervar-Sosto

Vienna (Technisches Museum): Aviatik D-I

Albatros B1.jpg

Vienna (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum-- Military History): Albatros B-I

That rounds out my recent Austro-Hungarian visit! I didn't make it to Wiener Neustadt to see Koloman Mayrhofer's Albatros. Next time!

I leave you with one more photo...Recent threads have pondered what would have happened if WW1 hadn't broken out. Well here is the car in which the Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo (28 June 1914). Now, if this car had not made that wrong turn, thus putting the passengers within range of Gavrilo Princip....

A good (and peaceful) weekend to all!
