Hi'ya
As someone who lives a long way from anywhere . I can only expand my knowledge with published material that I can order from book stores . My library is hopeless when it comes to two-seater imfo , and I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for any books only the subject , either for German or British Air Services . I am told that CCI and OTF have the best sources for some unit history's . I've just joined CCI and will join OTF soon ( i know , i should be ashamed for not already being a member ) and will try to buy as many back issues as I can that contain two-seater imfo . Is there a list of contents of back issues ?? . Also Dan-San and Rick are working on a book I believe on Schusta's , will this be an Osprey book ? , any idea on a release date ?. Finally is there any other sources ( in Australian , or at least in English ) that can be purchased on these subjects .
Thanks and sorry for a question that should have taken one line but has taken 20 ..maybe I should think about being a politician .
Phil

Phil,

I can thoroughly recommend "Bomber Pilot 1916-1918" written by CPO Barlett, should be readily available second hand via ABEs. If you want a real bargain, Bartlett's son reissued the book under the new title of "In the Teeth of the Wind" - for some reason its being sold at about £7 (GBP).

I think the foreword is different, and some of the photographs are different, but hey, how many new books can you find at that price.

"Pompie" Bartlett flew with Naval 5 and 205 RAF (not long with the RAF as the medics threw him out as being unfit to fly!), flying Nieuport 12s, Sopwith 1.5 strutters, the prototype Sopwith B1, and the Airco DH4.

It's a dam'n good read, and you will even find the occasional Aussi in there as Goble was the CO.

Another good book is Frederick Libby's Horses Don't Fly.

Phil,

Here's some food for thought:

Bewsher, Paul Green Balls: The Adventures of a Night Bomber (Greenhill - 1986; originally 1919)

Bott, Alan An Airman?s Outings with the RFC, June-December 1916 (Greenhill - 1986; originally 1917) ? 1.5 Strutters

Heydemarck (Hauptmann), War Flying in Macedonia and Flieger Abteilung 17 and Doppel-Decker C.666 ? CO of the Drama staffel (von Eschwege)

Insall, A.J. Observer: Memoirs of the RFC, 1915-1918 (William Kimber - 1970)

McCollough, J.M. We Flew with One Wing - observer with the 168th Aero. (ISBN 0-8059-2490-6)

Noble, Walter With a Bristol Fighter Squadron (Portway - 1977; originally 1920)

Townsend, Phil. Eye in the Sky, 1918 ? flew RE8's with 12 Squadron in late '18.

Squadron Histories

Burge, C. Gordan The Annals of 100 Squadron ( www.patrickwilson.com/annals/book.html ) - FE2b and HP 0/400

Butterworth, A. With Courage and Faith: The story of No.18 Squadron RAF (1989) ? DH4. Flew Chinooks in the Falklands

Ford-Jones, Martyn; and Valerie F-J Oxford?s Own: The men and machines of No.15/XV Squadron RFC/RAF ? BE2c and RE8

Goss, Chris It?s Suicide, But it?s Fun: The story of 102 (Ceylon) Squadron 1917-1956 ? FE2b night bombers

Harvey, William ?PI? in the Sky: A History of 22 Squadron RFC & RAF in the War of 1914-1918 (Colin Huston) - Brisfits

Many of these are still on my wish list!

You've joined CCI but have you checked your back yard? *Every good Aussie student of WW1 aviation should join "The Australian Society of WW1 Aero Historians" *http://asww1ah.0catch.com/

With reference to 2-seater squadrons, a particularly good account of a Corps squadron's operations can be found in "The Battle Below" by H N Wrigley. *This is the unit history of 3 Squadron AFC.

The down side? *It's as rare as rocking horse $H!T! (Yes I do have a copy! A re-print not the original. The reprint cost me $A90.00 - I couldn't come at $A750 for the original.)

The up-side, Cam Riley has been posting the book in installments on his site. *More hits on the page might encourage him to post more of the book. *http://www.australianflyingcorps.org/books.html

Even if you're mainly interested in the RFC/RAF you should find out about the AFC squadrons. They operated under British doctrine (even if it was with an Australian flavour!)

3AFC was recognised as being an outstanding Corps Squadron (some think the best on the Western Front).

BTW I didn't say "every good student of Aussie WW1 aviation" I said "every good Aussie student of WW1 aviation". The ASWW1AH's members are interested in WW1 aviation as a whole. Some specialise in Australians but there are people interested in all the other bits as well.
