Aircraft with the best sounds

For me its the Nieuport 28.I seen vid on youtube of ROF and man those Le Rhone's can purr!I like its high toned drone!I also like the bark of those Spandaus.

If this is the Nieuport 28 I'm thinking of, it's normally got the Gnome Monosupape 9N 150 h.p. rotary which is a raspy, prodigious white noise generator. The men who flew these things had iron gonads to stand more than 2 hours in the cockpit with something making over 130 decibels of racket up front. I bet they missed their SPAD 7s.

And the Neiuport 28 had Vickers MG, when they were available....

Actually then new AEF had to wait or borrow guns for their first flights in their Nieuport 28s. Imagine doing front patrols in a plane that had a habit of shedding it's upper wing canvas in a dive with no weaponry.

One of the nicest aircraft engine sounds I've ever heard was the Vickers Vimy replica of G-EAOU, built a few years back. I don't know what engines it had it in when I saw it a few times at some airshows way back in the 90s, but I do remember that it sounded bloody lovely, whatever those engines were.

IIRC that replica was first flown on a pair of Chevrolet big block 454 that were geared to swing the big propellers. I also seem to recall that Chevy engines were near their output limit even when flying at cruise. So they were re-engined with some big V12 gasoline engines from BMW. Ironic doesn't even scratch the surface, you think Rolls Royce would take notice of this little oversight...

The nicest sound I have ever heard from an aircraft is one powered by the mighty Merlin V12. A spitfire at full blast at low altitude, what more could you ask for, absolutely beautiful sound, music to my ears..
