August G. Blume
August G. Blume, preeminent authority on Eastern Front aviation of WW1, peacefully passed away on February 6th. I last spoke to him by phone, while he was in the hospital, on February 3rd.
August "Augie" Blume was a valued and very active Board Member of WW1 Aeroplanes, Inc., until health matters caused hm to resign last year. During the two years I served as Chair of WW1 Aeroplanes, Inc., I benefited from his advice and experience, and his criticism and enthusiasm. His unique and remarkable two-volumes on Eastern Front aviation of WW1, which took many years to complete, will be published this year by Schiffer and will stand as a tribute to the remarkable depth of his knowledge and his intense dedication to scholarship. He was a wonderful friend to many who shared his enthusiasm for early aviation and will be very sorely missed by those who knew and worked with him, and those priviledged to call him a friend. Another significant loss to our dwindling community of early aviation enthusiasts! It's some comfort to know that his research on the Eastern Front, in which he had an obvious passionate interest, will not also pass away.

I had the opportunity to correspond with him only once, he was a really good man.
In case people don't know, he donated much of his collection to the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Phil

Sad to hear. I have been looking forward to seeing his work published for a long time. Glad to hear it will stand as a legacy for him.

Indeed a very sad message.
I could look into his collection of material of the Eastern front work in May 2007 when I visited Augie and his wife Ruth. He did a phantastic work. I can only advice to buy both volumes if Schiffer publishs the books this year. Hannes |
