20 July 1917 ?

In his diary, Mannock's refered to a fight which took place N of Armentières on the 20 of July 1917. The english flight of six scouts including Mannock was leading by Keen. The germans were only three, but Mannock described them as "3 of the finest german pilots he ever wish to meet" and "artists".

Just want to know if someone has informations about those german fighters.

maybe the opponents were JGI-pilots?

Bodenschatz reported 6 victories for the day, Lt. Walter Stock (Jasta 6) downed a R.E. 8.40 a.m. near Armentières. Two Jasta 4-pilots claimed Sopwith-oneseaters on this day.

As Hannes says, a staffel of JG1 must be prime candidate. The JG was based on three airfields just to the West of Courtrai at the time (Marcke, Marckebecke and Bisseghem), in readiness for the British Flanders offensive that started a couple of weeks later. They were flying a mix of Albatros D.V's, and Pfalz D.III.
