Mr. Arango Crash

It has been just under 1 year since the tragic crash of a Neuport 28 flown by Mr. Arango. Has there been any factual information, other than the original preliminary report, that has been released? My reasons:

1. Accidents lend insight.

2. Insight provides the community data points.

3. Data points provide the community experience.

4. Has physical health been ruled out. (Heart attack, possible stroke, no way of knowing, etc)

5. Has any structural failures been ruled out. Broken engine mount, throttle cable fitting failures etc

5. My current understanding is the engine MAY have had an issue causing speed and altitude issues on a downwind turn to final.

I have no interest in disparaging the pilot, I never knew him, everything I have read is positive, I am only looking for any facts that may help us all in the future with pilotage consideration and general replica safety. Only a year and the issue may still be sensitive to the family and those closest to him. Any insight would be helpful however.

The dearth of response to a safety question is curious.

It’s my understanding is that the final public report has not been posted yet, or at least as of 2weeks ago. These things are always more complicated - I am sure a well done and thoughtful report will follow. Everyone agrees on the actions to close this very sad accident.

Do you want people who have no relevant knowledge of the accident to provide responses? I'm sure I can come up with some "generalities".

No of course not, I could not find, nor did I realize the final report had not been issued yet. I understand the sensitivities and potential liabilities reports may or may not generate....just curious about the safety aspect for general community use as described in my original post on topic.

Clay, I don't think the lack of response is meant as a slight to you or your question. I think it is a byproduct of having a small WWI community. As you get more and more involved in the WWI lifestyle (Yep, it's a lifestyle), you will get to know, and will know of, many of the people here on the forum and elsewhere in the WWI world. When something happens to one of them, it hits close to home, because each of us has let our passion for the era and our respect for the men and machines take us aloft in aircraft that are...well, relatively dangerous.

When I started down this path, I was like you and wanted to know everything about what I was getting into. In hindsight, I would say search the forum thoroughly. Most everything has been covered at least once. Definitely post if your question remains unanswered though!

If you are searching for safety information, try the NTSB accident database: https://www.ntsb.gov/_layouts/ntsb.aviation/index.aspx

I learned a lot about flying the Fokker Dr1 from reading accident reports, specifically things I wanted to make sure I checked on my plane.

Again, don't take any offense to the lack of response. It is a small community, and people who are "in the know" probably just aren't ready to talk about it.
