Junkers D1 Roden 1/48 cockpit interior

Hi All,

following on from the previous posts about the Junkers D1 cockpit interior, I've finally started to hack plastic. Now another issue raises its head. I couldn't reconcile the Datafile photo of the cockpit interior with the framing shown by the kit. Looking at the Flight magazine's plans and description it appears as if Roden's version of the framing and bulkheads (transverse frames) is at best politely termed 'approximate' - in fact it is largely spurious.

Hopefully, the two attached photos should show the differences. The first is the kit's frame and bulkhead positions marked in red and blue respectively. The second shows all of this removed (ready for corrugating) and the 'true' framing/bulkhead arrangement. This is only for illustration purposes and is not the final, precise set-up - for instance I've shown the bulkhead behind the pilot's seat at too great an angle.

Also, I read that the bulkhead (frame) behind the pilot was made airtight with fabric. So this should be shown with fabric attached (behind the frame?). Anyone's guess as to the fabric - plain or even lozenge. Perhaps 4-colour for this Junkers-Fokker built example, if the control column style is the indicator.

It never ends.

Cheers,

GrahamB,
Your second picture is correct.

Hi,

just thought this shows some modelling activity on my part. A bit messy looking with old paints spots on the brass and the ink from the marker-pen. Hopefully it'll look better under a coat of paint.

Very thin brass embossed over the wing corrugations, epoxied to the fuselage sides. This method of doing the brass is very easy - but it is merciless with mistakes, including accidental puncturing/scratching and excess glue.

I replicated the struts by first putting a thin brass strip down then adding (the slightly narrower) 0.005 x 0.01" strip on top. Done a bit of Milliputting on the cockpit leather coaming - not sure how this is going to turn out. The lower fuselage part has been similarly dealt with and I've made a simple frame attached to the rear bulkhead to support the seat (as per Flight account)

Very nicely done. I saw something recently done this way with aluminum foil.

Wow. That dude have a very huge Matches! I just finished my 1/48 scale Junkers D.I lang and thought it went pretty well, BEFORE seeing this. Now I just think I have to throw it into garbage. Amazing job for small scale.

Rhinocerus,

Thanks for the links to the Russian site.

In case others did not notice it, there are British and German flags at the top left of the page to translate the page to English or German. The translation results are not perfect, but helpful.

Junkers D.1 interior

Hi,

thanks Stephen for the kind words. Also good to see some other attempts at this technique. I had a practice about two years ago when I fitted out the cockpit and cabin interior of a Special Hobby Junkers W.34. My trouble is still that my modelling ambitions far exceed my abilities - unlike those such as Tom Morgan and Lance Krieg.

Have now shot a coat of Alclad Duraluminium over things and they look pretty good - apart from the inevitable (for me) dust particles and other debris that I hadn't noticed before painting. I am still unsure if the Duraluminium and aluminium was left unpainted on the aircraft interior or received a coat of paint/lacquer. The Flight report seems to suggest it was bare as the surface was beginning to crystalize/develop whitish coating. I might compromise and add a coat of slightly matted clear varnish with a spot of grey-green paint to tone it down a bit.

If it looks half reasonable I'll post some more shots.

Cheers,

GrahamB
