Udet "Met With Severe Accident"
BERLIN, Nov. 18 (INS)—Death of Lieut. Gen.
Ernst Udet, one of the Reich's most famous airmen and chief of the technical bureau of the air force, was announced officially today.
According to the announcement, Udet yesterday "met with a severe accident and died on his way to a hospital." He had been testing a new weapon when the accident occurred.
Chancellor Hitler ordered that a state funeral be held in honor of Udet, who gained fame as a military flier in the last war and later through his exploits as an aerial "stunt" pilot.
A government spokesman declared:
"Since Udet died while testing a new weapon, the circumstances of his death prevent announcement of further details for the time being."
The spokesman added that on orders from Hitler, the Luftwaffe pursuit squadron No. 3 has been named the "Udet squadron."
Nature of the weapon Udet was testing when the accident occurred was not revealed.
