Info on History of Squadron 24 ?

A friend of mine asked me to post a question for her. Can anyone tell me the publisher and year of Captain Illington's History of Squadron 24 ? I tried finding this in the Library of Congress online card catalog without success.

Thanks in advance for your help! --Steve Suddaby

Hi Steve,

According to Noffsinger's bibliography:

"Illingworth, Arthur E., A History of 24 Squadron, Sometime of the Royal Flying Corps and Later of the Royal Air Force, appendices compiled by Major V A H Robeson MC, with a foreword by Air Marshal Sir H M Trenchard; London: The Aeroplane and General Publishing Co. (1920)," "Of this edition, specially bound, 275 copies have been printed by Messrs. Carling & Hales, Limited, at their works at Hitchin, in the County of Hertfordshire, and published by the "Aeroplane" and General Publishing Co. Limited for private circulation among the officers of 24 Squadron."

That's all Noffsinger says.

You may be interested to know that this book has recently been re-published in a softbound facsimile by The Naval & Military Press Ltd, in association with the IWM. I possess a copy and it's very nice indeed. Check out:

Hope that helps.

Greg

Steve- The good news is the Naval and Military Press have reprinted the book in an affordable paperback format, as they have for 60 Sq, Naval Eight and a few others. They have their own web site, but here is a general source. In general, these books are no where near as comprehensive as we have come to expect from Alex Revell or Mike Westrop on RFC/RAF/RNAS units, but they do have good information written when the principals were alive.

Just noted 3 original copies for $400+, but if I were you, I would want to see the paperback version first unless you are a really rich collector.

A little more information on the original editions if you are one of those collector types.

The limited edition of 275 for the officers of the squadron are individually numbered, and are bound in blue cloth boards and black leather on the spine and around onto the first inch plus of the boards. It's a thin (104 page) quarto size book, and the individual number information is at the very back of the book. It's a nice heavy paper.

I haven't seen the non-numbered version, but I believe it doesn't have the leather, and I don't know about the paper.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help, everybody. (I should have thought of Noffsinger's.) And I wish I could say I'm a rich collector, but I'm not! --Steve
