I helped my dad put research about his Uncle's death on the web recently. His Uncle was killed flying the Camel at No. 44 Squadron Hainault Farm. He has collected some great pictures and information and would love to hear from anyone who might be able to share some information.

The site address is www.prcraig.com

Thank you
Mathew Craig

An excellent site Mathew, very well put together. I urge everyone to have a look.

One nitpick - your Sopwith Camel cockpit is actually a Sopwith Triplane cockpit!

Page 4 of the site has a group photo, identifying J H Summers.
Is this John Hamilton Summers? Can anybody confirm?

Neville,

I can confirm that it is JH Summers as the face matches another 44 Squadron group photograph, he made a number of home defence flights against Giant and Gotha incursions.

If your man, John Hamilton, flew home defence duties, there is only one "Summers" listed in my bible, Christopher Cole and Frank Cheesman's "The Air Defence of Britain, 1914 to 18". I can ask Frank the next time I see him if you like.

Frank seems to have a photographic memory for christian names, despite being well into his 80's.

My John Hamilton SUMMERS trained at Richmond NSW. served RFC.
Post-war, civil Avn, RAAF, long record of flying.
Trace what you can of him by all means. Get you off line? This is somebody else's thread.

Thank you for your kind remarks to Mathew. You're right he did a super job.
I don't think your comment was a nit pick re the camel cockpit. That's what amateurs like me get when they run up against knowledgeable pros!!!!.
What happened was I took a picture of the cockpit of the Sopwith Triplane in the Ottawa Avaiation Museum and a picture of the cockpit in the Camel
in the the War Museum and must have transposd them when we were putting together the site. My error and thanks for pointing it out.
Cheers
Peter
