You are so right about the "Spainish flu" as it was referred to at the time. It claimed many men. AA Mcleod (Victoria Cross) died from it just a few days before the end of the war. The flu may have killed over 20 million people.
On side note, several Dannish miners who died of the flu in 1918 were buried in the permafrost in Greenland. Scientists are planning to dig up the bodies and will examine the virus with modern equipment. The results should be interesting.
