A friend of mine, a 9th AF P-47 pilot defending his advanced airbase in France, assassinated a FW-190 (which is the preferred method--most people don't want to FIGHT anybody). The 190 took the full concentration of eight .50 calibers inside boresight range and disintegrated; didn't explode but simply came apart. The Jug pilot was too close to avoid some of the debris so he landed quickly, climbed out and looked his plane over. He fingered some streaks on his canopy which he thought was hydraulic fluid, but it didn't smell or taste right. The crew chief joined him on the wing, sampled the fluid, and exclaimed, "Hell, Cap'n, that's blood. Confirmed for sure!"
It's rare but it does happen.
