Darryl, I can't claim to know a lot about psychiatric medicine, but I did come across several references to this while ploughing through the French stuff on Guynemer. Later I discussed these references with a friend who does have some knowledge of these matters, although I thought no interest in WW1 aviation, and she informed me that me that many of the airmen of the great war suffered from stress and clinical depression. To my surprize she specificaly mentioned von Richthofen ,not the Red Baron but von Richthofen, the surprize being that she had even heared of him.
Although I have confessed that I know little of psychiatric medicine I do have some knowledge of mental handicap. It is my belief that one leading ace had an undiagnosed condition which falls into this categorie, but I shall leave it hanging there rather than get into a fight. And no, it is not one who is regularly attacked and defended on this forum.
The only trench rat I have any knowledge of is my grandfather. He went to war in 1915, his elder brother having been KIA in October 1914, and spent much of the next three years in or near the front line. A more well adjusted man you will never meet.
