Schlegel was still an NCO when he was killed so did not qualify although he did receive the NCO equivalent the Golden Military Service Cross. Some were KIA before the award could be approved and it was not awarded posthumously. Finally, by mid to late 1918 the speed with which scores were amassed was such that the bar was constantly being raised Degelow had scored 30 before his was awarded on 08/11 and Buchner 40 before his on 25/10.
