1 Sqn scrapping

Quote:
Lt W C Campbell, 1 Sqn, Nieuport 23 B1700, Halberstadt D out of control Becelaere at 08:45/ 09:45

Lt P F Fullard, 1 Sqn, Nieuport 23 B3486, Albatros Scout out of control Comines - Houthem at 08:45/ 09:45
Campbell was leading a 6 strong OP which scrapped with three German formation between 16,000 & 12,000ft; two of 10 machines and one of 8 machine described as mostly new type Albatros (DV's). Judging by a description of another new type, 'Monocoq, with stationary engine, short wings, rounded tail, exceptional climbing powers', what Campbell described as 'Halberstadter' may have been a Roland DII.

Campbell's was cfm by Fullard, who himself closed to 6 feet of an Albatros firing all the time - HA went into vertical dive, flattened out, flew erratically and then spun rolling over and over. Confirmed by Lt Jenkin who followed it down for a distance.
