I don't know any details about the changes and times but I can tell you that at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, we have the cross taken from the starboard side of MvR's Dr1 which shows part of the original curved Iron Cross showing through the overpainted black and subsequent white overpaint to get it to appear as the 'proper' Blazenkreuz. This suggests to me that the original issued instruction wasn't very specific about dimensions or appearance. Presumably the riggers took the easy way out with the black paint using the widest part of the Cross (the ends) producing a 'thick' cross and then someone decided that wasn't what was required so they had to overpaint that black with some white to get it back to what was intended.
