Tracer usage
I was reading "Winged Victory", in it Tom mentions "A" flight loading up with Buckingham and tracer in order to go balloon busting.
I thought this was interesting, because it seemed to suggest that tracer wasn't part of the normal mix. Would this have been the case ?
Also, how effective was the trace from tracer ammunition, was it as effective as more modern compounds, or hard to follow against a bright sky, which I suppose, might suggest a reason for it not being part of a normal loadout.
I understand Buckingham ammunition was frowned upon, except for balloon busting, was tracer considered to be the sort of thing only the dastardly Hun might get up to or was it generally accepted as free and fair ?
