My Gallery
Handley-Page O/400

Gentlemen:
I have just concluded a study of the Handley-Page O/400 markings, roundels, serial numbers and lift here markings. This study has included the variations between Handley-Page, Royal Aircraft Factory, Clayton & Shuttleworth, and the all other manufactures. The early roundels on the wings and fuselage varied from full chord to 70" diameter on the upper wing surfaces and full depth of the side of the fuselage, and full chord and heighth of the rudders.
Sometime around late August or early September 1918 the Air Ministry, or whoever issued instructions for a uniform marking and display of the roundels. All the roundels on the wings and fuselage became 35" in diameter with a 1" wide border. The rudder stripes were changed to a Flash 18" wide and 26" high surrounded with a white border, 1" wide. The serial numbers were painted on the rudders below the flash in 6" high figures.
The Lift Here markings became three 2" wide stripes full heighth of the fuselage sides.
These maskings were standard on all O/400 after this change.
My question is do any of you have any information of this change, and specifically what was the exact date of this order?
Blue skies,
Dan-San
