1). We as modellers need to attract new (read young ) modellers to the hobby. If not the hobby dies with us.
Might I suggest an alternative point of view. While it's inarguable that most of US were exposed to hobbies early in our life, times change.
We currently live in a world where an entry-level modeler is in his 30s-40s, now has a stable job and probably had a kid or two. This is true whether you're talking about model railroading, model boats, RC airplanes OR plastic models. This isn't an opinion, there is solid demographic data to support this.
So...while it's admirable to debate what's necessary to get kids involved in model building, it's only part of the story. Model groups need to change their view of recruitment of adults in my view.
Right now, far too often adults who show interest are treated...well...like adults. At the head of this thread, for instance, a statement was made that many people say they don't have time to model. As they're adults, they should "know" this sort of thing, right? But what would happen if a kid said the same thing? We'd say, "Anyone can find time to build plastic models." and we' discuss building in short intervals, little bit at a time equals a model, etc.
Also, when you're a kid (remember way back when), showing interest in something is tantamount to being adopted by the people who are doing it, right? Well, adopt an adult...they need just as much help, often more than a kid does.
But most of all, it's important to recognize that "when we die there won't be any modelers" is only a function of replacement, not replacement with young kids. Right now there is a HUGE number of baby boomers looking for hobbies. Give them one.
Cheers --- Larry
