Central Powers POWs in Russia in WW I
Finding out what happened to German and other Central Powers airmen taken prisoner in Russia is topic that pops up once and a while on this site. Some months ago I found the book "Among Prisoners of War in Russia and Siberia" by Elsa Brandstorm. She worked for the Swedish Red Cross and this is the only book I have found that deals with this subject. It is a very good overall account of the POW experience ect. Of the over 2,300,000 Central Powers soldiers taken prisoner by the Russians 600,000 died! There is only one mention of German Airmen. After Libau was bombed by a Zeppelin in 1915 the Russian Goverment ordered captured crewmen from the Crusier "Magdeburg" and airmen to be treated as convicts and they were held in solitary for 13 months before both sides calmed down and they were released. It would be interesting to know the names of the airmen involved.
