I don't have any technical knowledge in this area, but I seem to recall that the more blades a propellor has, the less the efficiency because of blade interference problems. But multiple blades might be used to get the maximum from the engine without excessive prop diameter and ground clearance problems (and eventually tip supersonic concerns).
