From all that I have read, I have never read of aircraft competition conducted by the British and the French Air Forces and Aviation Ministeries.
A new aircraft was flown to France for evaluation by front line squadrons. I am sure the French did likewise. After the front line evaluations they would be returned to be modified to meet the front squadron suggestions.
