Halb.Cl.II camouflage.
blowhard:
In the description, the investigator said the "the fuselage and center section in stippled in the colors of the printed fabric."
I have wondered myself if the yellow is the varnished plwood exposed between the stippled paint (lacquer?).
The one question that keeps bugging me for an answer, "How was the stippleying accomplished?" In looking at a blow-up of the picture of the Halb.Cl.II at Krakow shows what might be evidence of the end of the brush being dipped in paint(lacquer?) and tapped on to the plywood surface. The are lateral smudges where the brush bristles moved side ways, creating a line instead of a series or group of spots. This was most likely done with a large brush.
A French investigator suggested they may have blown the powdered pigment on the wet varnish to achieve this effect. My view is it was done with a brush loaded with paint(lacquer) and tapped on the plywood surface.
I have seen various artists who have guessed at the finish, evidently without reading the reports, or if they did they did not get passed a scrumble of colors. They colors I used in the illustrations for "Schlachtflieger!"were the same colors as I used to represent the printed fabric. When I do an illustration I spend more time on research, than I do in the actual painting.
Before fore I paint I test the colors by copying them in black and white against the grey values in the photograph. Also I have a black and white copy of my Munsell Student Handbook using orthrochromatic film. This was done by Jeff Schroeder as college project. I also have a black and white copy of the Methuen Handbook of Color.
If I have missed anything reask your questions.
Blue skies,
Dan-San
