Bullard’s combat record listed two enemy planes shot down, but the first, a Pfalz, crashed behind German lines and was not confirmed. In November, 1917 his group was attacked by a flight of Fokkers. Diving into a cloud to escape a pursuing German, he came out below and behind the enemy aircraft and was able to shoot it down in Allied territory.
