First, let me say that I have been in the gun business for over 50 years. I'm an NRA life member, and I have given a substantial portion of my income to fight for "our second amendment rights." However, there are some disturbing facts that everyone seems to turn away from:
1. The amendment begins by saying that a well regulated militia (etc.) I know of only one state, Tennessee, that still has a militia. All other Militias were disbanded when the Federal Government disbanded Civil Defense. I was an officer in the Washington State Militia until its demise by Government order. Today we have Army, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard Reserves, but these are not Militias.
2. When the Civil Defense demise dissolved the militias, presumably every citizen eligible for the draft from 18-65 was a "Militiaman." When the draft was closed down in favor of an all volunteer service system, the Militia faded into thin air.
3. Citizens over 65 were never given the right to keep and bear arms under this amendment, because they are beyond the Militia age limit.
4. So, until our rights ar re-defined, or the draft is re-enstated, we are not protected. Us older fellows won't be covered even then.
What are we going to do about this?

(1) read the founding documents and case law and you'll see you're flat wrong. The unorganized militia is males 18-45 years old.

It has always been 18-65, and this was re-defined in 1940 when the WW-II era draft was started.

This is an extremely serious consideration that Congressmen and Senators contacted will not respond to, or give referals to someone who will. I've done my part by calling attention to the problem. (Mandatory WW-I content: The U.S. entered the war in 1917 to protect our citizen's rights from foreign attack.)

As belgian (europe) I cannot understand why americans are defending the "right" to have a gun at home?
Don't say me it is to defend yourself! Guns bring only one think: Violences...
Take an exemple: my country has 10 millions peoples living, laws forbid weapons. the result? 30 murders by years! It's nothing. It is more or less the same number of murders than in L.A in a week!!!

In the US, citizens have been allowed to keep and bear arms so that during wartime, the soldiers will have at least a familiarization with the weapon they are issued...it has nothing else to do with anything. By the way, sir, exactly who was it that liberated your country at the cost of thousands of young lives, in two World Wars, after your non-shooting-familiar soldiers waved a white flag? Now do you get the idea?

The Greater LA area actually has 10 million people. I'm sure they have more murder's there than Belguim, however things are a little more crowded in LA methinks.

Anyway please ignore John's comments about saving you in two world wars...spoken like a the "steriotypical" American John, well done.

Take that attitude to Belgium and i'm sure you'll get far. You'd think America won both wars by itself the way you talk. They maybe could have if they started them both when everyone else did! People treated me like S@@%$ in Europe until they found out I was Canadian. Maybe read some history books (outside US history) to find out why Belgium was too weak to defend itself from a larger nation and what THEY did to help take it back.

Back to topic...
It's a good idea Wilkin, to have a gun in America so you can (try to) protect yourself from all the wacko's with gun's. The problem is everyone is armed, and no easy way to un-arm them, also the people are worried democracy could be "taken" away, and with everyone having guns, the Government would never try it. Actually it's not a bad idea, Democratic governments have fallen to a dictator before, it could happen again.

BTW I do not think all American's are like John...it's just one's like him that get remembered when they visit other countries....sorry everyone.

You gotta short memory, pal. Can you remember during WW-II when American members of the NRA were asked by England to donate their guns so that they could arm the Home Guard because guns were banned in the UK? My, how easily they do forget. But, they never forget to hold out their hand for alms from the Sucker Americans. And boy, do they yell for help in a war! Apologize for yourself and enjoy the gun ban imposed by Ottawa.
I'm abssolutely certain that there will be no more crime in Canada as a result. We'll see, won't we?

Sorry Kory, but here's a little Canadians-run-amok-in-Europe story...a friend of mine went backpacking in Europe and met up with some Canadians who were backpacking as well. During the day the Canadians were well-mannered and they had the Candian flag on their backpacks so everyone knew where they were from. But then when the Canadians hit the towns at night they acted like jerks to everyone, swore at people, got drunk, got into fights, and then told everyone they were "Americans".
