Lt. Frank Drummond, Observer, 135th Aero
2 Attachment(s)
Wondering if any forumites might have any other photos of Frank Camm Drummond during WW1. He served with the 135th Aero Squadron as an observer in 1918. Individual or with a group is fine. I'm working with the family secure copies of any images out there. Please see the attached. Thanks!

Frank Drummond, in group photo, frame 86 of Gorrell M.17
There is a large group photo of the officers of the 135th that was taken at Toul late in the war (or just after?) that is reproduced in Gorrell M.17 that includes Drummond. There are no ids in Gorrell, as far as I can tell, but the same photo is reproduced inside the back cover of Lawrence L. Smart's The Hawks that Guided the Guns (privately printed, 1968), and he offers ids. According to Smart, Drummond is 5th from the right in the back row.
Unfortunately, the Gorrell print is not high quality: perhaps someone has an original that could be scanned at better resolution. I can try (later in the day) to upload a copy of the Gorrell photo, in case you can't access Gorrell at Fold3. https://www.fold3.com/image/311370964 (behind a pay wall). best, ---Marian |
Hi Marian, Thanks very much for that offer! I do not have current access to Fold3 so would appreciate an attempt on acquiring the photo.

I think I've managed to attach a copy of the group photo as well as a detail showing Drummond.
As mentioned, I hope someone else might have an original of the photo, which would allow for better/higher resolution. I've looked for a copy of the photo at the National Archives (111-SC- collection), but it looks as though they don't have it. best, ---marian |

Hi Marian, The photos are great to have! Thanks for digging this up!
Drummond's family are most appreciative! |

I found another one of him in Gorrell's. This is about the best I could zoom in. He is in the center back row.
The second shot is from the US Army Signal Corps, taken 9 Aug 1918 in Ourches, France. The man in the center with the goggles on is probably Drummond. Steve |
Hi Regular!
Many thanks for the effort! Yes, Drummond is 5th from left back row! The other shot from 9 Aug 1918 is new to us too but the family is not sure if any of the men are Drummond. This is great! |

Sheesh! Sorry! Yes, 4th from left indeed. We have tried to get a better photo or scan of the ID card (framed under glass) which owned by a distant family member that is not too cooperative so far. Working on it. Thanks Regular!!

I have an original photo of the squadron already scanned at 600 dpi, but several attempts to upload it have failed. I'll try again later.
