Austro-Hungarian Green
I'm working on Merrian Cooper's 1919/20 Alb (Oef) D. III 253.218 -- the 1/72 Encore (Roden) kit with the sworl print. It calls for fuselage to be Vallejo Verde Oscuro 70.970 (FS 24062). I also am considering MisterKit AH05 Austro Hungarian Albatros Dark Green. The Vallejo is between a forest green and a grass green, and the MisterKit is a drab medium greyish green.
Could anyone recommend one over the other, or some other better paint? Thanks, Bob C |
Well, I see no one had any ideas, so I was forced to go it alone. The kit instructions gave Vallejo vj70970 Verde Oscuro ("approximately FS 24062") as their call-out, so I got me some vallejo paints. Their "approx. 24062" was IMHO, more like FS 14109, a rather bright garish green. So I saw a reference to KColor paints, which had a FS 34062 "Deep Green", so bought that. It actually looks rather good, and in spite of my usually trying to stay away from water based acrylics, worked quite nicely. Although I think it is closer to FS 34064, a darkish olive green. But it looks good, and I'm sticking with it. Also, FWIW, Encore's red recommendation Vallejo vj70908 Carmine, was not a good match for the red in their Polish ntl insignia decals. After much experimentation, and not a little expense, I found that Testor's Model Master Chrysler Engine Red was a good match, assuming you can find it somewhere. So there you have it for Merrian Cooper and Encore's Albatros in 1/72.

And these are the kit decals. I also have sworl decals by Mike Grant, Blue Rider, and some really nice ones by Aviattic. I toyed with the idea of using the kit decals as a pattern to use the Aviattic, but at this moment, I think that may be a bridge too far. In the photos above, the "green-ness" of the fuselage does not show very well, nor does the slight green tint On the A-H cdl, which I don't like, but am not going to redo it.
Comments invited. And I'm pretty thick skinned, so go to it! |
