Instrument screws

I am trying to get new brass screws for my Type 5/17 face plate and the instrument light holder.

The screw measures 0.375 long (right at 10 mm) by .097 (maybe .0965?) across the threads. I don't have the correct pitch gauge so am not sure what it is.
If these are 2.5 mm, I would guess the pitch is 0.45, or if #3's then I would guess something like a 48 as the thread of the 2-56 is not just smaller in diameter but in pitch.

If push comes to shove, I will tap them out to 4-40's. Not my first choice, but don't seem to be able to find what I need yet.

www.mcmastercarr.com Pan head metric brass screws.

www.mdmetric.com Most other style metric screws, in brass and steel. Terrible website to navigate, but a lot off stuff in there.

Pan heads are probably the right ones, but you could also use cheese heads if the threads turn out to be metric. Seems fitting for a Wisconsin project, somehow.

As always, great info. Thanks Vet!

Funny you should say that, John, because 2 of the screws are Fillister type (for the instrument light holder) but can only find "cheese heads" in brass in these smaller sizes. Hard to imagine there is not a vibrant market for these 100 year old fasteners, eh?

Other interesting findings on the face plate mounting screws, one screw was a flat head (under the instrument light fixture), the other are oval heads. Any idea if using flat heads all around will mike any difference?

Chip,
I'm not at all sharp on antiquities. Doesn't it seem likely that all the screws were the same? I seem to be able to get better results with oval heads, I bung them up less often.

More on cheese-head screws when i can remember what I owned that had them.

memory is too loaded up with stuff I wish i could forget, mostly all the dumb things i've done. akkk.

If the holes are countersunk enough for flat heads to sit flush then use them. Could be someone in the past replaced the flat heads.
