First, thanks to Leo, Captain Lewis, Gregoire, and Rick for all your help. I'm sort of new at this and a little unsure of the protacall. But I do have another question. In doing research, I saw a copy of a painting depicting the truly daring capture of the Norwegian sailing ship Royal, by the Zeppelin L23. Can anyone tell me the commanders name and when the event took place? Also any other info on the event would be great. Thanks,
Milton |
The Norwegian bark 'Royal' was captured on 23 April 1917 by the L 23, under the command of Kapitaenleutnant Ludwig Bockholt. Reference: "The Zeppelin in Combat" by Dr. Douglas Robinson, pp. 220-221. R.

Dear Milton,
L-23 was later shot down, on 21 August 1917, by a ship-launched Sopwith Pup from H.M.S. Yarmouth (piloted by Sub-Lt B.A. Smart, supposedly the first time for him for such a take-off; he later led an attack on Zeppelin sheds in 1918, destroying the L-54 and L-60 in their sheds). Now put THAT in your goddamned story! ;) VBR, Captain "The Gun" Lewis |
Ahhh..., Captain Lewis,
You are so right. That is an amazing story. Consider it done. Milton |
