Richthofen's First flight as observer?

It was an early AEG aircraft (G IV ?) that were fondly referred to by their crews as "Apple Barges".

It was an Albatross B.II.

I think Bruno Stachel is correct - Richthofen flew in Albatros B.II with FFA 69 in the East after the end of his observer training in Grossenhain. Georg Zeumer was pilot there too.

Hello Iron!

The Germans used a system with letters to describe their aircraft.

An aircraft of the B-class is an unarmed 2-seater biplane (the pilot sittting behind the observer).

An aircraft of the C-class is an armed (one flexible mounted MG for the observer and later a fixed, forward firing MG for the pilot) 2-seater biplane. In this class the positions of the crew had changed to give the observer an improved field of fire. Although the photo below shows not the gun, you can see the mount of the gun directly over the German markings on the side of the fuselage.
