Late in 1914, and in 1915, the RNAS employed an Albatros B2 on home defence duties.
As far as I can tell, the machine was purchased privately before the war, and either donated to the war effort or commandeered in 1914. The only photograph that I have seen of the aircraft shows it being flown solo, from the rear cockpit - if this was normal practice, how was it used offensively? Has anybody got any more information on this particular aircraft or history? Mike |
No takers?
Ok, I've found out a little more, it was "impressed" at Immingham 5th August 1914, and given serial number 890. It was delivered to RNAS Grain for home defence on the 13th August, and chased a Friedrichshafen seaplane on Chrismas day. it was damaged a number of times, but repaired, until finally being deleted on the 7th April 1918. I bet the seaplane pilot wondered what the hell was happening! |
