There is an SE-5 with a Hisso flying in California with suspected RPM problems. What is the actual diameter of the exhaust pipes on both sides of the fuselage. We suspect it is currenly too small and may be choking the engine somewhat.

Was that flying with a Fokker DVIII last Sunday? If so, I have the pair on videotape, and the sound is fairly clear. I thought it was the Fokker that wasn't running smoothly, so maybe it is a different SE 5.

Tufts Lane:
The exhaust pipe is about 3.5 " in diameter. I look over Javier Arango's real good last Saturday, what a beautiful airplane. Tim wasn't it a smooth sounding engine, that 180 Hispano-Suiza, what a sweet sound, absolutely smooth. The Fok. E.V with the 160 Gnome sounded like a sheet being torn in two, a real buzz-saw, what a treat! Tim it was a pleasure to meet you, I had a great time, I also met Lee Branch,a real great guy, and a friend, we bummed around together most of the day. I met Ross Walton and Dick Enos, Fred Murrin, Zona and Jim Appleby. Dick Enos is building a Fok. D.VII. Ross is the guy that has lozenge fabric for sale also a very good friend. I am looking forward to next year. What a day! Blue skies, Dan-San Abbott |
Dan,
It was a great pleasure to meet you also! I had never personally met Lee before either, and it is nice to put a face with a name. He has been so much help with the Luke effort. The internet is wonderful but no match for a chance to shake someone's hand. What a great day! My dad ran into people he knew from the SLO area. They were the motorcycle enthusiasts who brought out the old Indians. I am still completely enjoying the event whenever I have a moment to daydream. I have to admit that I have never seen or heard an original Fokker or SE 5 fly before. It sure was something, as was everything else that was going on. I hope we have a chance to visit again in the future. Tim |
Yes, It is flying up at Wentworths hangar in Paso Robles, CA.

Yes, this is the same airplane. We understand that the SE 5 has had difficulty getting full rpm so the exhaust pipe size was a question by us bystanders. Also the tach was checked and found to read 150 rpm low so perhaps it isn't doing that bad. Anyone interested in WWI airplanes needs to visit Mr. Enos and see his project. Although I haven't seen it myself, I understand it is really "to print". Lane Tufts
