Bruce Stanley Claridge Jackman, an observer with 48 Squadron who achieved six victories in 1917, was the son of Alfred Claridge Jackman and Caroline Maria Stanley Drinkwater. He enlisted at the age of 16 on 7 November 1908 and served with the 2nd Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps. He was appointed AM1 on 22 June 1918. Following the armistice, Sgt. Jackman received Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate 6454 on an Avro biplane at military school, Boscombe Downs, Amesbury on 30 November 1918. He was reclassified Sergeant (Aerial Gunner) on 1 January 1919 and was discharged from service on 11 April 1920.

Classified Fit Grade II (Home Service) on 29 March 1939, Jackman re-enlisted at Uxbridge in the Class "E" Reserve for four years. He was severely wounded in action during the Battle of Britain and was awarded the Military Medal for his actions that day.
