During World War I, the British honours system was used to reward an individuals' personal bravery, achievements or service to the British Empire. The honours system was comprised of three types of awards: honours, decorations and medals. Honours recognised merit in terms of achievement and service, decorations usually recognised specific acts or deeds, and medals recognised bravery, long and/or valuable service and/or good conduct.
